28.2.2009 Saturday, Bunya Mountains NP, QLD

Bunya Mountains are, not surprisingly, named after the bunya trees that cover the mountain. Bunyas are umbrella-shaped pines up to forty meters tall and almost as wide. A single pinecone from these giants weighs about ten kilograms and the nuts in it could feed a whole aborigine tribe (and in fact, in the old days they apparently did.) The pinecones are mature now that it is February, so during the forest walks you can occasionally hear them falling to the ground from their heights. They sound like investment bankers.
