16.2.2008 Saturday - Flinders Reef, Moreton Bay

Went diving with Nautilus dive shop, once again...they had promised to go diving off Stradbroke Island, once again...ended up on Flinders Reef, once again.

Well, at least this was the best of the three trips to Flinders so far. There was a green turtle in practically every hole and crevice; a school of twentysomething small barracudas patrolled the region, while a group of more than a hundred moon wrasses decided to follow my dive buddy around; for what reason, I don't know. They just surrounded him, almost covering him from sight. Had they been cleaner wrasses, I would have thought it was the dead skin from his sunburnt neck they were after. I liked the flutemouths best, though. Some of them were yellow, some masked in their elaborate camouflage: silver combined with black stripes spotted with white dots. And there were plenty of them! (Or, considering the fact that they can do the camouflage thing and the fact that I never saw more than one at a time, maybe there was just the one...) After diving we drove to a group of exposed rocks in the middle of Moreton Bay to have lunch with dozens of dolphins swimming around the boat.

The photos are not from the dive trip. They're from the salt water aquarium at the Toowong Village mall.

9.2.2008 Saturday - Byron Bay, New South Wales

Byron Bay with its endless beaches and lively surfer scene was as charming as ever. In the evening a strange celestial show was displayed: the stunningly bright Milky Way above, and a distant thunderstorm with numerous lightnings in the horizon. On the meadow behind the Byron Bay Caravan Park you could barely avoid stepping onto noisy frogs, and luckily I didn't walk into the web of this orb-weaver in the darkness (it was this close, and she was such a cutie!)

8.2.2008 Friday - CityCat, Brisbane

Was planning to go to the Moonlight Cinema (an outdoor movie event organized in big Australian cities in the summertime) but the city was covered by yet another massive thunderstorm, which was preceded by the most conspicuous crepuscular rays I've ever seen. So, ended up doing just a nice sunset cruise on CityCat, instead.

7.2.2008 Thursday - St Lucia, Brisbane

There was a partial solar eclipse in the afternoon. Only a few percent of the sun was occluded in Brisbane, but it was wicked fun observing it with Larry's sextant anyway.
